Working from home has its challenges, and advantages. With many of you finding yourselves in a home office unexpectedly during our COVID 19 crisis, here are three tips you can try:
- “GO” to work. Mentally. This doesn’t mean “work.” It means mentally flip a switch that says “I’m at work now.” Is like stepping over a mental transom and you are working; and when you step back over the transom, mentally, you are at home. And so, in your mind, it’s a mindset that you go to work.
- Establish start, end, break and lunch times. Create routines that are predictable not only for you but for your co-workers, and your other co-quarantined family members. If you choose 8:00 as your start, be at your desk at 8:00. Avoid doing the dishes, taking the trash out or other home duties. Behave as though you need to be at your work office by its required start time. Those dishes/ trash can wait, just as if you were running a tad late getting out the door.
- Minimize interruptions. Yes, this is difficult, but possible. Interruptions cost you time. Identifying your interrupters – kids, family, relatives phoning just cuz you’re “home,” Facebook dings, texts, etc., etc., etc. Do your best to consolidate or minimize them, and you’ll be more effective.
