What “Managing Up” Really Means

Too many workers think that they need to try to “manage” their bosses. Not so. If you try it, you’ll regret it.

During my career, when I was the boss, I could tell who was trying to “manage” me, or worse, “manipulate” me, and who was trying to build a strong working relationship with me. Bosses aren’t stupid, and most of them have a decent degree of EQ, so transparency and honesty go a long way to building your “cred.”

A few points:

Bosses aren’t perfect. Help them instead of complain about them.

Bosses get overwhelmed too. Don’t add to it, Take away some of their stress laden tasks.

Bosses may have different motivators or triggers than you do. Try to figure them out.

Bosses respond to trust. Build trust with your boss and your team. Be a person of your word, do your honest best – every time.

Bosses want  great performance.Do your job really well.

Just remember, Managing up doesn’t mean sucking up. Partner with your boss on the larger goals you both have.
