Too many people let their egos get in the way of progress and good work.
Sure they work hard on a project or a cause. Then, instead of handing parts off to people better suited to handling the matter, they keep the project (aka the glory) for themselves. They hold on to things they shouldn’t.
All this does is slow things down, or worse, get a lesser result.
I encountered this the other day when the chairman of an organization decided to be the contact person to ask a potential large donor for a needed contribution. Because this person was the leader, the choice was in that person’s hands. The sad part was that there was another person in the organization who not only knew more about the opportunity we were offering, but actually knew the person we were trying to reach. The chairman risked losing the deal because of wanting the credit for making the “sale.” Luckily the story ended well, but not without an awkward conversation with the chairman.
If you focus on the end result rather than how it will make you look, you’ll get things done faster and more effectively.
Teddy Roosevelt said “You can get a helluvalot done if you don’t care who gets the credit.”
I agree.
