It took me a long time to realize that vulnerability is actually a very important leadership trait.
I always thought I had to be “perfect” for my employees and co-workers. and boy, did I try. And it wasn’t until I showed my true self, and my vulnerability that things really started to click with my team.
This seemed so strange to me – they admired me more when I messed up!
Then I remembered a time when my boss actually asked me, “Oh my, did I drop the ball on that?” I couldn’t believe it, first of all. Then, I realized that he was human. As was I. It was a notable shift in our relationship, at least from my perspective.
Leaders are human. We all are. To pretend that we aren’t can create barriers.
Vulnerability is transparency, and more than that it is who you really are. Why hide that?
