“Just Doing My Job”

“I’m just doing my job.”

How many times have you heard someone say this?

First, let’s look at the word “just.” What do you infer from that? Doing the minimum? Accepting average performance? Apologizing?

What happens when we remove the word, just?

“I’m doing my job.”

That’s a more powerful statement. It states a fact, non-emotional, direct. Perhaps even some pride in that statement.

OK, let’s look at the other opportunity in this brief phrase.

What if you replace the word “doing” with something else?

What if you replaced “doing” with “improving” or “impacting” or “enhancing” or “reinventing” or “transforming”?

Words matter, don’t they?
