I agree that #5 Listening is greatly important especially these days. I have “harped” on that for some time. In fact I think everyone should tr to find a course on Listening skills. Too often as we “listen” we are really forming what our response should be
And you KNOW they aren’t listening when they interrupt before you’re done. Thanks for your comment Mike!
Frame of Reference is a huge thing with my coaching clients. Something that I think is important to me, may not be important to them. I keep notes on my clients to help me remember where they are coming from and where they want to go. Most people want to take the shortest route, though others really enjoy the journey along the way and want to acknowledge every milestone.
I like your comment about taking the shortest route — the journey is “where we are.” It is where others are. They may not be the same, but the dialogue and discovery can be amazing.
These motivation factors are relevant as we interact with our spouses as well as employees. As we praise and thank others, they are likely to praise and thank us too. We need to be more aware of how often we interrupt people who are talking whether it be in person, on a phone call, or a virtual meeting. Perhaps a person can ask others to give them feedback to see if this is a practice that needs to change. Good listening skills are especially important in developing relationships.
Very well said, Rosemarie. Thank you!
It is amazing how you forget the easiest things, kind of like over thinking it. I am guilty of forgetting frame of reference and that is important. I was on a zoom seminar all weekend and it was training and the last hour of each day was recognitions. Public praise, thank you and motivation.
You’re right, they are easy, and don’t cost anything, other than a little bit of time. Thanks for sharing.
These are excellent…interesting, entertaining, and substantive. I’m looking forward to many more.
Thanks, Bill! That means alot coming from you. 😉
All good reminders, especially frame of reference and listening which really go hand-in-hand.
That’s a great observation, Betsey. HOw can you get into someone else F.O. R. without truly listening to them? Thanks.
Really like the delegation of the WHAT not the HOW. That goes along with Strategy versus Tactics (learned a lot about that in my time on the CPCU board years ago)
