Watch what you drink. This could be the single most important tip about office party survival.
There is a reason that alcohol is referred to as “liquid courage.” Alcohol can sometimes give people false courage. If you’d haven’t said what you’ve wanted to say at work, avoid letting that “courage” you just drank allow you to say it during the holiday gathering.
No one likes a drunk – and getting intoxicated with coworkers and your boss around is not a good idea. Offices are infectious with post party gossip, and your best strategy is to NOT be subject of any of that.
How much? I’ve read advice that suggests drinking NO alcohol at the office party. It might be something to consider. However, if you choose to have that adult beverage, it behooves you to “stay behind” the rest of the crowd. In other words, if the boss has had two, consider you having just one.
Your guest matters. If the function includes spouses and significant others, the same tip applies for your guests. No boss wants to hear the “real issues” about the company from an employee’s spouse.
Holiday parties can be really great for camaraderie and fun. You’ve spent a lot of time with these folks, and it is nice to relax and enjoy each other. Just beware the liquid courage, and you’ll have a delightful time.
