Congrats or your appointment as committee chairman!
Here’s a little secret…
The chairperson is, most of all, a coordinator, energizer and a facilitator. That’s the secret.
You say “Duh.” But guess what? This is a place where many, especially new, chair people, make mistakes. Many take on that new role as though they have just been given deity like powers that enable them to know all the answers, choose the work they prefer to do, and take all the perques for themselves. Have you ever known anyone like that?
The reality is, you have been appointed to the position to coordinate and manage, not because you are the smartest or have all the answers. If that was the case, they would have given you the project to do alllllll by yourself.
Even if you are the smartest and have all the answers, that is not your role. It is important that you understand that you not the ultimate decision-maker.
You are the facilitator.
You have been given a group of very talented folks to work on a project; the more you use the synergy in that group, the greater your result will be! And the sooner you embrace your role as being its facilitator, the sooner your group will rock!
And one more little secret – let the group KNOW how you perceive your role. It saves time, and lets the group hit the ground running!
