Her rule of thumb should be that if it will take longer to type your e-mail than to pick up the phone or visit the person and simply relay the message through conversation, don’t waste time creating the e-mail message. Workplace interruptions cost the U.S. economy $900 billion per year (according to research by information-technology research firm Basex[1]) – that’s not a number any company wants to see during a recession.
