To conclude this month’s emphasis on boundary setting, several of you have asked for examples of clear boundary statements.
Just remember, before you make any such statements, it is important that you are both clear and consistent on what your boundaries are. Then, the boundary should be clear, specific, and properly and nicely communicated.
Here are some examples to get you started:
- I’m sorry, I can’t meet with you at that time. When, during our business hours of 8am to 5pm can work for you?
- I want to hear about your work day. I will be free to give you my full attention as soon as I finish this letter I’m writing.
- Sure you may borrow our car. We’ve cleaned it and gassed it for you. We’ll appreciate your returning it the same – clean and with the tank full.
- If you put your clothes in the hamper, I will wash them for you.
- You may go out to play as soon as you make your bed and finish your homework.
- We can deliver your month end reports as long as we receive your data by the 25th of the month.
- I will be happy to give you feedback, but only if you request it.
